The 11 Core Values Behind Touchlab's Sense of Touch

Touchlab exists to give robots the sense of touch. This isn't just a technical challenge; it’s a design philosophy. Our mission to redefine what’s possible in robotics is built on a simple foundation: The 11 Tactile Robotics Design Principles. These principles are more than a rulebook—they are the core values that guide every decision, from the materials we select to the final form of our haptic sensors. They are how we ensure our products are both reliable and truly innovative.

The 11 Tactile Robotics Design Principles:

1. Function First, Form Follows

Every design decision we make starts with one question: does it enhance the robot’s ability to sense and interpret tactile information? For us, a design’s primary purpose is to enable precision and reliability. Aesthetics and form are carefully considered, but they're always in service of this core function. In haptics, where precision is everything, a sensor's form must always facilitate the most accurate data capture.

2. Simplicity Enhances Precision

We believe that great design is as simple as possible. By stripping away unnecessary complexity, we make it easier for our products to seamlessly interact with various environments. Simplicity isn’t a limitation; it’s a key to unlocking greater precision.

3. Inspired by Humans, Designed for Robots

Our work draws inspiration from the human sense of touch, but we’re not just mimicking it. We design our products to go beyond human abilities, leveraging the unique strengths of robotics to enhance sensitivity and adaptability, detecting subtle pressures or temperatures a human hand could never register.

4. Intuitive Integration

Our products are designed to work smoothly with existing sensors, electronics, and hardware. We ensure everything functions together seamlessly, creating a system that is both intuitive and reliable.

5. Robust Elegance

Our designs are not only beautiful but also built to last. Robustness is the new elegance. They must withstand a wide range of environmental conditions and tasks without sacrificing their refined aesthetic. We believe that durability and elegance should go hand in hand.

6. Truthful Materials

We use materials that are honest about their purpose. A soft, flexible covering, for example, is chosen because it genuinely enhances tactile sensing, not just because it looks like human skin. Every material has a job, and we choose it for that job.

7. Long-Lasting and Adaptable

We design for the future. Our products are built to remain relevant as robotic systems evolve, offering the adaptability needed for different tasks and industries over time. We want to create solutions that are not just for today but for years to come.

8. Less, But Better

We focus on the essential. Rather than overloading our designs with excessive features, we concentrate on creating simple, reliable, and effective products. We believe that a few well-executed features are far more valuable than many mediocre ones.

9. Environmentally Responsible

We are committed to minimizing our environmental impact. This means creating designs that reduce waste, use sustainable materials whenever possible, and consider the full product lifecycle—from manufacturing to eventual recycling.

10. Push the Boundaries of Innovation

We're constantly challenging the status quo. By leveraging the latest technology and materials, we aim to create products that redefine what’s possible in robotic touch and capability.

11. Learn by Making

Our design process is hands-on. We learn by doing—through prototyping, testing, and refining. Building and experimenting are essential steps that help us discover what truly works and how we can make our products even better.

These principles aren't abstract concepts—they are the blueprints for every product we build and the foundation for our shared future. They guide us every day as we work toward our goal of bringing the sense of touch to the world of robotics, transforming industries, and redefining what's possible.
